“The strength of the STP stems from its diversity and magnanimity. It was an honor to contribute to the increasing diversity of the department. Let’s commend the students who are shedding light on the unexplored areas of the academic landscape with their persistent efforts.” ~ Moonyul Mr. Moonyul Yang, a master of Science and Technology Policy under the supervision of Professor So-Young Kim and an active-duty army officer, is interested in the correlation among actors who are unlikely to directly affect a sovereign state’s national defense policy and ecosystem. His thesis, titled “An Unlikely Link: Socially Responsible Investment Funds and the Defense Industry,” provides empirical evidence of the negative impact of socially responsible investment funds on the defense industry ecosystem and each firm’s stock price and behavior. His lab, the “R&D Policy Lab,” explores the dilemmas and tensions underlying the allocation and management of publicly funded R&D. After two years of academic study, he is returning to his military service. However, he continues to pursue academic advancement while serving as a military officer, focusing on the governance of emerging technology. Let’s hope that his efforts will bear fruit in the near future.

"Happy to conclude my era of uncertainties, and yet sad to leave my best people at STP" ~조승희 Dr. Seung Hee Cho/ 조승희, a valued member of the Technology and Social Imagination lab, dedicated her research to understanding the intricate relationship between technologies and human interactions. Under the mentorship of Professor Chihyung Jeon, she delved into her dissertation, focusing on Jeju Island as a pivotal ground for exploring renewable energy prospects. Dr. Cho found inspiration in Jeju's historical significance, particularly the Jeju 4.3 incident and the ongoing energy policy experiments on the island. Her dissertation illuminated the potential of emerging technologies to catalyze enduring cultural and material transformations in such locales. With an enduring curiosity for the cultures and histories of places like Jeju, recognized as exceptional arenas for sociotechnical experimentation, Dr. Cho has been a part of STP for eight years (2016-2024). As she embarks on new endeavors, we extend our heartfelt wishes for success in her future pursuits.
