Application process

  • Who is eligible for application?

    • For master’s program, anyone with a bachelor’s degree in the field of Science, Technology, Humanities, or Social Sciences.
    • For doctoral program, anyone with a master’s degree in the field related to Public Policy, or a doctoral degree in the field of Science, Technology, Humanities, or Social Sciences.
    • For Mid-Career program, more than 2 (master’s program) and 3 (doctoral program) years of experience inside the field related to Public Policy is required alongside to a bachelor’s or master’s degree.

  • Which degree is conferred after finishing the STP master’s or doctoral program?

    • Master of Science for master’s program and Ph. D. for doctoral program.

  • What is the difference between “government scholarship,” “KAIST scholarship,” and “general scholarship”?

    • Government scholarship students’ expenses are covered by government contributions, and KAIST scholarship students’ expenses are covered by the school scholarship, contribution, and research funds. General scholarship students are affiliated to and sponsored by a governmental or private agency. However, STP also welcomes self-supported applicants and applicants without formal affiliation.
    • STP applicants are required to choose between “KAIST scholarship” and “general scholarship” upon application.

  • How should SOP (Statement of Purpose) be written?

    • You can download the form from KAIST Admission website. Both versions (Korean and English) should be no longer than 3 pages.
    • Standard KAIST application material requires you to submit a letter of introduction in 1,800 letters. It does not matter if the contents in SOP overlap with this.
    • The English version need not be a strict translation of the Korean version. Please be free in expressing yourself in both versions.
    • It is recommended that you focus on the reasons why you became interested in STP and your career goals while writing the SOP.

  • How is the interview conducted?

    • The question may be in either English or Korean, and the questions may vary between applicants. We are asking the motivation for application as a general question. Frank and comfortable attitude is appreciated.

  • Who is eligible for international application?

    • The applicant is not a citizen of Korea, and should require one of the following:
      • Master’s program
        • From those whose parents are both foreigners, the applicant must hold a bachelor’s degree, equivalent or higher academic achievement.
        • From those who completed education equivalent to Korean elementary, middle, high school and university outside of Korea, the applicant must hold a bachelor’s degree, equivalent or higher academic achievement.
      • Doctoral program
        • From those whose parents are both foreigners, the applicant must hold a master’s degree, equivalent or higher academic achievement.
        • From those who completed education equivalent to Korean elementary, middle, high school and university outside of Korea, the applicant must hold a master’s degree, equivalent or higher academic achievement.
    • International school located inside Korea is not eligible.
    • Korean citizens with dual citizenship is not eligible.

Education, Research and Graduate School

  • What is the difference between STP and Public Administration schools?

    Public Administration schools provide education focusing on hands-on experience to train high-position public servant and to research administration theory. STP aims to train academy-oriented science and technology policy expert serving in diverse fields of research, government, NGO, private sector and journalism. Therefore, we appreciate structural education on basic science, technology, liberal arts and social sciences over more hands-on knowledge.

  • How does a student decide on the instructor?

    • Master’s program students are given an opportunity to have one-to-one discussions with all of the professors and decides on the lab to join in until 6 months after admission. After deciding the instructor, students are expected to have periodic meetings with their instructor to get instructions on their thesis, while the method may vary between professors.
    • Doctoral program students should decide and contact the instructor before admission.

  • What is required of KAIST scholarship students and what do they do?

    They

    • get their tuition and other expenses waived partly,
    • should pay admission fee,
    • are provided on-campus housing, and
    • have an opportunity to work as a teaching or research assistant.

  • I am curious about labs in STP.

    All students are allocated to shared office, and you are expected to work on personal study and research in the office. There is spatial distinction only between master’s and doctoral program students. We endorse an environment in which students can freely engage in debate and share ideas.

  • I am a Korean male student with military obligations to fulfill. Can I get special research positions for military duty substitute?

    Those who are graduating from science and engineering background to join STP doctoral program with KAIST scholarship are eligible to apply for technical research personnel for military duty substitution.

  • How is the career after graduation?

    The field of science and technology policy is a multidisciplinary one with social demand. We anticipate the increase of opportunities for education and research in universities and policy institutes. Also, the demand from governmental agency, private sector, and journalism related to science and technology policy is increasing. There are many job opportunities for STP graduates.

  • What kind of practical experience of 2 or 3 years does Mid-Career program require?

    By practical experience, we mean those relating to science, engineering, or science and technology policy. We are open for diverse career in research, planning, and policy office.

  • Is it possible to pursue on the career while being enrolled as a student?

    General scholarship students are possible to be affiliated to a workplace while being enrolled. But they should thoroughly check their course schedule with their personal one.

  • About how much is the tuition?

    Tuition change by year in principle. If you want the details, please contact us individually.

Education, Research and Internship

  • Is there an internship opportunity for STP students?

    Master’s program students can have their internship longer than 2 years approved as equivalent to 3 research credits. Agencies allowed for such are limited to governmental organizations relating to policy and government-funded research centers during summer semester. If you wish to earn credits by internship, you must obtain approval from the department office in prior.

  • I am planning to earn credits by internship. Are there any limitations to the agency I am having internship at? And are the opportunities introduced by professor or department office?

    • You can earn up to 3 research credits by having an internship at government affiliated agencies, by enrolling to STP497 (1 credit) and STP498 (2 credits).
    • You are on your own to look for internship opportunities. When you are ready, please acknowledge the department office where you want to have an internship at.
